History & development
Vimshottari is a planetary-period framework transmitted within Indian natal astrology. Its name refers to a 120-year cycle. Modern practitioners use it alongside a birth chart; it is a symbolic allocation of time, not an astronomical orbit lasting 120 years.
Mythology & symbolic world
The succession of nine lords reuses the graha vocabulary, including the lunar nodes. A period lord is an interpretive designation. It should not be confused with a planet moving into a new sign on the date that the period changes.
Provenance: where the rules come from
The workspace calculates the Moon-nakshatra Vimshottari sequence from the selected recorded sidereal frame and a 360 or 365.25-day year. It retains the full first mahadasha, including its prebirth portion, and nine antardashas in every major period. Local settings also apply to natal lord facts, the personal wiki reading and the selected-period export. The separate raw ephemeris table retains its labelled default.
How it is calculated
Choices that change the result: Enter a full UTC date and time, choose At birth or Now, select a major period, or inspect an antardasha's exact start. The schedule has no alternate ayanamsha, year-length, age-input or third-level-period control.

Interpretation methods
Distinguish the inspected instant from the selected period
The instant summary identifies the active major/subperiod pair. Selecting a different timeline segment opens that major period's details without changing the inspected time. Use Inspect this exact start to move the time to a subperiod boundary.
At a shared boundary the new period owns the instant because the previous interval excludes its end. Selecting a future timeline segment is a browsing action, not an event prediction.
Read the lords with their natal facts
The side panel supplies the selected major lord's natal facts and, when applicable, the active antardasha lord's facts. Read these together before forming a limited theme. Open D9 separately for a divisional comparison; it does not change the stored Lahiri schedule.
One quarter of a Ketu-ruled birth mansion elapsed leaves 5.25 of its seven conventional years. Its antardashas still partition the original seven-year period, rather than restarting at birth.

Concepts in this tradition
Follow a term for its definition, word origin, evidence and connected ideas.
Disagreements & limits
- The recorded cycle totals 120 conventional years from the beginning of the birth-containing period, not 120 years after birth.
- Instants outside the stored cycle are reported as out of range; cycles are not extrapolated.
- No automatic event forecast, third-level periods or alternative year conventions are supplied.
- Rahu/Ketu natal display follows the selected node setting, while schedule timing stays based on the Lahiri Moon.

Practitioner sources describe their own systems. Historical and astronomical sources support different kinds of claims. Reading exercises are editorial teaching examples.
