A period within the 120-year cycle

A mahadasha is a major planetary period in Vimshottari’s 120-year cycle. Each contains nine antardashas.

How to read the period

Rao ties period interpretation to the lord’s natal and divisional placements.

Start by identifying the selected lord in your own chart. Keep its observed position separate from any interpretation. Record which chart and reference you used, so a second reader can reproduce the steps.

Work through an example

Suppose a complete Venus major period lasts 20 nominal years. Its Mercury subperiod receives 17/120 of that interval:20 ×17/120 =2⅚ years. With 365.25-day years, that is 1034.875 days; with 360-day years it is 1020 days. This is an arithmetic example, not a forecast or a natal chart.

Subdivide the complete major period before marking its prebirth portion; do not restart subperiods at birth.

Review the calculation year and lunar starting point shown in the tool before comparing its dates with another program or a worked example.

The cited modern teaching supplies a reading procedure. It does not date the first historical use of the Sanskrit period names or establish that planetary periods cause life events. For a fuller reading, inspect dignity, strength, associations, relevant divisions and competing indications rather than inferring events from the period label.

Word origin · etymology

Sanskrit compound: mahādaśā.

Mahā- is the compound form of mahant, meaning great; Rao glosses daśā as period. Mahādaśā therefore literally suggests a great period. This lexical explanation does not establish the term’s first historical use.

Nested period arithmetic and attributed chart interpretation

The period schedule is a reproducible calculation under stated conventions; its life interpretation is a traditional astrological claim. A correct date calculation does not test that claim. Treat the reading as a contextual account, and record disagreements without changing the convention to fit an event. This tool uses the natal Moon under a selected sidereal reference and either 360 or 365.25-day years. Rao discusses competing year lengths. Compare dates only when all input and convention choices match.
