History & development

Vargas are divisional classifications within Indian horoscope practice. The received Parashari corpus describes a sixteen-division scheme, while commentators and practitioners differ over some constructions. A declared method identifies the implemented reading of those rules; it does not establish one unchanged ancient software standard.

Mythology & symbolic world

Numerical names identify divisions of a sign. Associated life topics and divine names belong to religious and interpretive traditions. They are distinct from the measured source longitude and from the software convention used to display a mapped coordinate.

Provenance: where the rules come from

The Divisional charts workspace derives D1, D2, D3, D4, D7, D9, D10, D12, D16, D20, D24, D27, D30, D40, D45 and D60 from the same selected sidereal natal frame. It identifies the source segment, assigned sign and mapping method for each graha and Lagna. Equal-segment degrees are explicitly constructed display coordinates; unequal D30 is sign-only. The separate Navamsa workspace retains its existing D1–D9 chart, ruler, same-sign and sign-aspect controls. Optional sensitivity compares independently calculated charts at the recorded UTC time and two chosen time offsets without changing the birth profile.

How it is calculated

Select one of the sixteen named mappings and a detailed sidereal natal frame. Locate each graha and Lagna in its source segment, apply the declared sign assignment and count whole signs from mapped Lagna. Equal-segment fractions may be stretched to 30° for display; D30 remains sign-only.

Choices that change the result: Choose D1, D2, D3, D4, D7, D9, D10, D12, D16, D20, D24, D27, D30, D40, D45 or D60; one of six detailed sidereal references; true or mean nodes; a graha or Lagna. The optional three-sample birth-time comparison uses ±1, ±2, ±5 or ±10 UTC minutes. Fagan-Bradley and De Luce remain comparison references. The dedicated Navamsa workspace remains available with its existing optional outer-planet comparison.

Uses & use cases

  • Select a division and a graha to inspect the source longitude, segment and assigned sign.
  • Compare the same graha in D1 and the selected division while retaining its natal house and ruler context.
  • Distinguish the two-sign Hora, trinal Drekkana, forward D24 and source-sign D60 conventions from alternative methods.
  • Compare the recorded birth chart with two nearby UTC samples to identify changes in assigned signs or mapped Lagna.
  • Retain the selected conventions and derivation evidence in a downloadable record.

Interpretation methods

Method 1

Trace one assignment

Read the source D1 position and the selected segment, then inspect the assigned sign and its ruler. The rule explains the mapping; the selected topic and original reflection guide a separate interpretive question.

Study example

At 11° Aries, Parashari D3 assigns Leo. A third-harmonic longitude would be 3° Taurus. The same number three does not make these constructions interchangeable.

Method 2

Read D2 and D30 within their actual scope

D2 presents Sun/Moon ownership as the conventional Cancer/Leo chart. D30 assigns five unequal source portions to signs and omits mapped degrees. Keep these special constructions visible before transferring a rule from another varga.

Study example

D30 changes sign at its stated unequal boundaries, rather than advancing through thirty equal one-degree bins. This view therefore cannot supply a D30 degree orb.

Method 3

Read derived houses without inventing a new horizon

Count whole signs from the mapped Lagna and retain D1 context. This is an interpretive arrangement of derived signs. The dedicated D9 view continues to show its stated classical sign-pattern aspects.

Study example

If mapped Lagna is Aries and the selected graha is in Cancer, the displayed count is four. That count is not a fourth physical house calculated at a second observation time.

Method 4

Interpret a three-sample sensitivity comparison

Compare the recorded chart with independently calculated UTC endpoint charts using the same reference, node setting and divisional rule. Identify which rows change and keep the size of the tested offset visible.

Study example

Matching placements at birth and at ±2 minutes show agreement at three instants. They do not prove that nothing changes between those instants or that the recorded birth time is correct.

Concepts in this tradition

Follow a term for its definition, word origin, evidence and connected ideas.

Disagreements & limits

  • This is a declared sixteen-varga baseline; alternate Hora, Drekkana, D24 and other mapping variants are not selectable.
  • D30 mapped degrees are intentionally absent. Equal-varga display degrees do not represent a new observed sky.
  • Whole-sign divisional houses and sign rulers do not supply full dignity, strength, Vimsopaka scoring or an integrated divisional forecast.
  • D60 sign assignment starts from the source sign in both parities. A reversed sixty-name sequence in even signs is a separate, unimplemented layer.
  • The sensitivity tool compares three UTC instants only. It does not scan an interval, infer birth-time accuracy or perform rectification.
  • Fine divisions can be sensitive to source positions and birth time; a precise display is not evidence of precise birth data.

Sources & evidence

Practitioner sources describe their own systems. Historical and astronomical sources support different kinds of claims. Reading exercises are editorial teaching examples.
