Astronomical identity
Fomalhaut is the IAU proper name for Alpha Piscis Austrini A (HR 8728), in Piscis Austrinus. The IAU explains that the star accumulated more than forty historical names and variant spellings before standardisation.
The target’s official designation is therefore particularly useful for keeping a calculation record from silently changing referent.
Name and historical record
Fomalhaut derives from scientific Arabic fam al-hūt, ‘mouth of the [Southern] Fish’. NASA’s explanatory page gives the same translation; the IAU’s long list of historical spellings cautions against reducing the star’s full naming history to one label.
A name’s literal image does not determine the interpretation of a modern event pair.
Ptolemy’s named comparison
Ptolemy says that the bright star in the mouth of Piscis Australis has a Venus-and-Mercury influence. Editorial notes to the cited translation identify this star as Fomalhaut.
That connection is a historically mediated identification and the planetary likeness is kept as a source citation, not upgraded into a result of the current calculator.
Use in a modern paran result
