Porutham

In this entry

Also called Poruthams · Ten poruthams · Ten considerations · Dasa porutham

The South Indian check of ten considerations for a match: Dhinam, Ganam, Mahendram, Sthree-Dheergham, Yoni, Rasi, Rasyadhipathi, Vasyam, Rajju and Vedhai. The classical text read asks that at least five agree, and sets some adverse readings aside when the lords of the two Moon signs are the same planet, friends or opposite.

Word origin · etymology

Tamil poruttam (பொருத்தம்), a match or fit, with an astrological sense.

Wiktionary lists, among the senses of the Tamil word, the astrological one: favourableness or agreement of horoscopes of the two parties to be married. The English spellings porutham and poruthams are transliterations.[3]

How we know · epistemology

A classical rule list applied by counting

Each consideration is a rule about the nakshatra or sign of the two Moons and can be checked; the translation read is a scan with slips, some of its lists differ from Raman's, and where it does not define a case the page marks the consideration as not assessed. That at least five should agree is the text's own rule, not a measured threshold.[1][2]
