Word origin · etymology
Modern name; its origin is not verified here.
The phrase does not occur in Mark Riley's English translation of Valens. Brennan's podcast and the practitioner pages read use it, and one of them gives it as Schmidt's. No Greek wording is given here because none was checked in a primary text.

How we know · epistemology
Ancient textual rule, modern name
The rule is Valens's. In Book IV chapter 4 a Gemini period of 20 years uses one circuit of 17 years 7 months and the remaining 2 years 5 months start from Sagittarius, and chapter 10 repeats the rule for days and hours. A practitioner overview (Tony Louis) gives the same opposite-sign continuation and a page quoting Robert Schmidt (Sadalsuud) gives a Leo example. No dated chart in the sources read applies the rule, and whether it covers every level rests on Valens writing that the days and hours go the same way.
